This easy DIY reusable ice pack is budget-friendly, leak-proof and stays flexible even when frozen—perfect for bumps and lunchboxes.

We’ve all been there: A tripped-up toddler or a bumped knee and the only thing in the freezer is a stiff bag of frozen peas. While those work in a pinch, they aren’t exactly comfortable or long-lasting.

Making your own reusable ice pack at home is a simple, cost-effective way to keep a supply of “boo-boo bundles” on hand that actually contour to little elbows and ankles. Using just a few basic household ingredients, you can create a gel-like consistency that stays flexible even at sub-zero temperatures.

Plus, they double as the perfect, non-toxic addition to school lunchboxes to keep snacks cool and fresh until the midday bell rings.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rubbing alcohol (70 per cent isopropyl alcohol)
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 1L freezer bags (make sure they are good quality to prevent leaks)

Method

  1. Pour alcohol and water into a freezer bag, remove excess air and seal.
  2. Place inside the second freezer bag and remove excess air before sealing.
  3. Freeze and use as needed.
  4. You can also use some scrap material to sew a cover to act as a barrier from direct contact with the freezer pack.
